Expansion Joints
Elastomeric Expansion Joints
ORF bridge solution offers a variety of expansion joints to suit a wide range of movement and gaps between bridge decks. The complex rubber-metal composite structure of the ORF expansion joints facilitates in accommodating the displacement and rotation of the concrete structures relative to each other in all directions.
Advantages
- Long service life
- Corrosion resistance
- Waterproof
- Low noise
- Easy installation
Material
The materials used for the ORF Bridge Expansion Joints are completely in compliance with the relevant bridge standards like AASHTO/BS/DIN/EN. ORF bridge expansion joints are manufactured from a virgin polychloroprene-based elastomer. The specially formulated rubber compound helps to meet stringent requirements, such as abrasion resistance, extreme weather conditions, and longer service life.

Note:
Kerb Units
Kerb units can be manufactured with different angles and lengths based on customer requirements to suit the structural alignment of decks. Metal inserts are fabricated in accordance to the required alignments and are molded with elastomer to form a single unit.

Procedure of Installation
1) Joint openings to receive the ORF Compression Seal Expansion Joint System must be clean, dry, sound, relatively smooth and free of voids, ridges, and sharp projections.
2) The expansion joint seals must be properly sized for the joint gap opening. Installation: The ORF Compression Seal Expansion Joint System is installed by first applying a thin layer of lubricant cum adhesive to the side walls of the expansion joint gap. Then, the seal is compressed into the joint gap opening.
Strip Seal Expansion Joints
Purpose
Provides greater flexibility to accommodate any construction or repair project condition. It accommodates various expansion joint movements and contractions. Accommodates heavy duty loads and bridge deflections, the extruded sealing element prevents water from leaking through expansion joint openings.
Specification
The ORF Strip Seal Expansion Joint System consists of a rubber gland, mechanically tightened between two steel edge members and provides a superior watertight proofing system. The design of the ORF Strip Seal System can easily accommodate the high loads of vehicular traffic while effectively sealing joints in bridges and structures with very high movements. ORF Strip Seal Systems can be manufactured to accomodate a variety of field configurations along with multidirectional movements. The ORF Strip Seal has been engineered so that the Chloroprene Seal can be inserted either prior to or after the securing of the steel shapes to the superstructure. Machined Steel shapes maximize Seal install ability and minimizes manufacturing tolerance.
Usage
- For bridges and the gap between the two decks
- Skewed joints
- High impact and repetitive loading conditions
- Expansion joint applications with a maximum movement of 5 inches
- New construction and maintenance of existing expansion joint systems
Profiles
The ORF Strip Seal System utilizes two standard glands. The Rubber gland of the ORF Strip Seal System can handle movements up to 5 inches (127mm). Several sizes of the Elastomeric profile offer solutions to a wide range of field applications. The Elastomeric profile can be factory molded for skewed joints or joint intersections. All glands are produced from neoprene rubber.
Steel Edge Member
The ORF Strip Seal System incorporates the use of single standard configurations. See details for profile configurations. Steel Edge Members are machined from ASTM A588 or A36 grade steel. Available in coated or uncoated finishes as per the project specifications.
Expansion Joint Fixing Accessories
TRANSITION STRIP (QUICKMAST ETS)
It consists of a three-component epoxy resin-based engineering mortar, formulated to be used along with different types of bridge deck expansion joint systems and designed to form the transition strip between bridge decks and expansion joints.
BOLT HOLE FILLING RESIN (FLEXSEAL PP800)
This is a two-component polyurethane-based sealant, which cures to form a durable, flexible, watertight bond with most construction materials and is capable of accommodating dynamic joint movement. It is resistant to fuel, oil and hydraulic fluid.
BONDING ADHESIVE (QUICKMAST EP100)
A multi purpose, two-component, medium viscosity, solvent free epoxy resin adhesive. To be used for bonding EPDM membrane.
BEDDING MORTAR (QUICKMAST 201EJ )
Quickmast 201EJ is a three-component, solvent-free, high strength epoxy concrete, designed principally for use in construction and renovation work. The graded filler system allows easy placing and compaction with negligible shrinkage.
ANCHORING RESIN (KEYFIX E)
Anchoring resin is a two-component epoxy-based high strength adhesive and anchor grout. Anchoring resin is used as epoxy grouting for bar anchor, bridge bearing, bolts, nails, etc. It possesses very high strength, impermeability to water and resistance to aggressive chemicals.
EPDM Rubber Flashing Membrane for Waterproofing
EPDM rubber (ethylene propylene diene monomer (M-class) rubber), a type of synthetic rubber, is an elastomer, characterized by a wide range of applications. The E refers to ethylene, P to propylene, D to diene, and M refers to its classification in ASTM standard D-1418.
Waterproofing: EPDM is used as a covering to waterproof slabs/beams. It has the benefit that it does not allow run-off rainwater into the structures, which is of vital importance for waterproofing systems. It prevents the leakage of water, which escapes through the expansion joint to the pier.

Properties of EPDM AGg005 FB 643
Barrier Joints: A rectangular SS plate is used to cover the gap between barriers near the point of the deck gap. These rectangular SS plates prevent water from entering the gap between the structure at the barrier.
Material: SS304 Mill Finish Sizes: As per the specification and site conditions.
